Some iPhone/iTouch owners might not know which Apple iPhone or Apple iPod Touch model they might have...
Please note that knowing your iPhone/iTouch model is crucial in ordering accessories for it. You should always purchase accessories designed specifically for your devices model, as otherwise they can turn out to be incompatible.
This guide will attempt to explain which model is which.
iPhone:
First, let us see which kinds of iPhone models are there:
1st generation model is called iPhone 2G
2nd generation model is called iPhone 3G
3rd generation model is called iPhone 3GS
That is quite the line up! The easiest to distinguish is the iPhone 2G.
First, if you have bought your iPhone before June 2008, then you certainly have the 2G model. Note that the iPhone 2G was never officially on sale in Canada and became obsolete -- it is no longer in production -- as of July 2008, so if you have bought your iPhone from Rogers or Fido in Canada you certainly cannot have an iPhone 2G.
It is very easy to tell apart from the newer models because it has a large silver-gray colored metal backplate and 1/4 height sized black plastic cover at the bottom.
It is much harder to distinguish between 3G and 3GS models, since they are visually the same and both come in white or black colours. However, iPhone 3G came out in summer 2008, while iPhone 3GS came out in summer 2009.
However, the simplest way to differentiate between these 2 models is to check the home screen. iPhone 3GS has a compass app, as well as video recording capability, which you can see when you launch camera app, while the iPhone 3G does not have those apps or support for them.
And there is another method that allows you to see which iPhone you have.
Go to Settings > General > About while using your iPhone. There you will see a Model field with a certain model number on the right. Below you can find which iPhone revision corresponds to which iPhone model number.
iPhone 2G
MA501*, MA712*, MB384*.
iPhone 3G
MB489*, MA496*, MB500*.
iPhone 3GS
MC131*, MC132*, MC133*, MC134*.
iPod Touch:
Just like the iPhone, the Apple iPod Touch also has 3 different models:
1st gen model is called iPod Touch 1G
2nd gen model is called iPod Touch 2G
3rd gen model is called iPod Touch 3G
Now, to know which is which, go to Settings > General > About. There you will see a Model menu with certain numbers on the right. Below you can find which iPod Touch revision corresponds to which iPod model number:
iPod Touch 1G:
MA623*, MA627*, MB376*.
iPod Touch 2G:
MB528*, MB531*, MB533*, MC086*.
iPod Touch 3G:
MC008* or MC011*.
